Inside, a maximum of 300 diners can be seated, while 600 guests can be accommodated for a cocktail reception. Thanks to our flexibility, Africa Palace is ideally suited to galas, company occasions and weddings.

    1897 - Building of Colonial Palace & first Congo exhibition

    Leopold II commissioned the construction of the Palace of the Colonies in Tervuren to host the very first Congo exhibition, intended to strengthen Belgian interest in the Congo Free State.

    1898 – Founding of the Musée du Congo On the site of the Palace of the Colonies, the first Musée du Congo opens — a combination of museum and scientific institution that supports colonial propaganda and documents Belgian colonial activities.

    1910 - Opening of the neoclassical museum building

    King Albert I inaugurated the present neoclassical building in Tervuren Park, specially designed for the fast-growing ethnographic and scientific collections.

    1960 - Named Royal Museum for Central Africa

    After Congolese independence, the institute received its present name: Royal Museum for Central Africa (also known as AfricaMuseum).

    2018 - Reopening and renaming as Africa Palace

    During the extensive renovation and reopening of the AfricaMuseum, the former 'Colonial Palace' was renamed Africa Palace, recognising the painful colonial associations and symbolising a new, inclusive visitor concept.
